Hemingwrite on Kickstarter, an Alphasmart for the 21st century?

When I saw this all I could think about was the good old Alphasmart range that ran the Palm OS. They were amazing! Although I have to confess that I've never owned one.

The Hemingwrite seems to be a sort of 21st century version of the Alphasmart, but from what I can see not necessarily a massive improvement on it.

So, if you don't know what an Alphasmart looks like, this is it ...

Having just had a look, there are actually a few on eBay and they're going really cheap!

Music Studio #mobilemusic #app for #pda Not as good without the GM springboard though

I don't know about you, but this looks a lot like Graffiti to me!

Remember Graffiti? The handwriting recognition system that the Palm OS used to use? Well it looks a lot like this, which has just come to iOS. TUAW liken it to the Newton handwriting recognition, but I think it is more Palm OS like.

I guess that there really are precious few new ideas these days! I wonder what other Palm OS features we might see coming to iOS soon?

More stuff coming to the library in 2015

I've been clearing out files over the last few days and I've found a bunch of interesting palm related files that should go into the library just in case anyone needs them. So I plan to start doing that in the new year, and of course, as I do, I'll let you know about what's there.

Anything you'd like to see in Palmorama in 2015

Soon it'll be 2015 and another year for Palmorama. It's odd that the site has been going since 2006 and in that time the world of Palm OS has just got smaller and smaller. However, Palmorama will continue, and might even do some new things too. Who knows!

So, if you have anything you'd like to see at Palmorama then please get in touch and tell me.

In 2003: PalmSource delivers OS6 Golden Master to Licensees.

Although as far as I'm aware this never actually made it into any production devices. It was a shame, too little and too late really to get the Palm ecosystem back on target. It had lost too much ground by then.

A big thank you to everyone who's visited in 2014

I thought I'd just put down my thanks to everyone who's visited the site in 2014. It shows me that there are at least a few people left around who are interested in the fast becoming ancient world of the PDA.

Thanks for visiting Palmorama. Hold on to your PDAs for 2015!

Android on the REDFLY Smartphone Terminal (video)

I think that this could have been kind of cool if they'd stuck around a bit longer, but it was not to be. Celio didn't last in the end and their website is gone now, which in itself is a bit of a problem as you can't find any downloads of drivers for their stuff anymore.

So I may well be stuck with this device being unusable now.

Do you know what it is? Clue ... #pda

An ultra rare Palm Foleo on eBay and this is the 1,000th Palmorama post!

This is amazing. I don't think that I've actually ever seen one of these come up on eBay before, so at least for me it's a first. In theory the Palm foleo never actually went into production so there can only be a tiny handful of these units left in the world, and this is one of them!

So to say that it is exceptionally rare would be an understatement. However, it probably isn't going to be too usefulto you either I'm afraid. Being that there were never any officially in production there was hardly any official software for it, so you wouldn't be able to do much with it at all.

Anyway. It is a find. I'll be interested to see if it goes at all as the audience for something like this is going to be very small indeed.

Oh yes, and this is the 1,000th post on Palmorama! Quite fitting really that it's about something as strange and rare as a Palm Foleo! Here's to the next 1,000 ...

Well we're off to a bad start then

In order to get the whole Treo thing working to run lots of stuff, one thing has to be in place, and that's a SIM card in the Treo. Sadly the old Orange SIM that was in there for ages appears to have been shut down by EE now, and it's completely unusable now.

So, I have to try and get a new SIM that'll work in the Treo (which is locked to Orange, which of course doesn't really exist now). So let's see how that goes.

This post reminded me about something I've been meaning to do

I was reading this post at Entrepreneur and was reminded about something I was going to do around a similar, but of course far more retro subject of running a business directly from a PDA, or, to be more specific, from a Treo 650.

Of course, back in the heyday of mobile this is something that people pretty much tried to and often succeeded with, so it is nothing new. However, what is new is the idea that you can do this today with older technology, and as such it may prove to be difficult to achieve. However, I'm still going to try, because that's the kind of thing I do.

At the moment I'm not sure quite how I'll post this, it may be a series of posts around different challenges or it might be a single thing all in one go. I'm not sure as yet. I'll let you know.

No one else really did the flash thing on Palm OS

In fact I think that Sony were the only manufacturer who did, and not all their devices supported it either. There was a small number of developers who made stuff for the Sony Palm OS flash player, but hardly any really. In fact it wasn't really a thing. This pocket DJ thing was one of the only apps, or rather app-lets that I remember for it. Although I think there were several variants of this.

It's a shame about izBasic

Having got my Prism running using its nice little Bluetooth module I realised that I don't have the skills to make a bluetooth enabled app for my module. It's a shame because if iziBasic was able to handle bluetooth it would have been an ideal way to make an app to communicate between Palm OS devices. That would have been very cool indeed.

Still, I'll just have to find some other way of doing things now I guess.
