Handspring Visor Prism + Modules (video)

Not my video, but quite a collection of modules.

Visor at the Centre for Computing History

I don't usually search for stuff about PDAs, but I was looking for some information on the Prism and stumbled over this piece which was quite good, but also the site looks pretty useful too.

Bluetooth up and running in the Prism

Well the module works fine. All running with no problem at all.

And it happily detects other devices very quickly considering it's such an old device.

Now, all I have to do is work out what I want to do with it!

I don't know too much about this device or the manufacturer for that matter but it was another in the long line of third party devices to use the Palm OS, much in the same way as Google has allowed manufacturers to use Android.

Nice post at Newton Poetry

Newton was something I never got into at the time but always kind of wanted one. I've resisted the temptation over the last few years as I think I have enough retro devices to keep me busy on the whole. However, seeing the very occasional post over at Newton Poetry always makes me think about the Newton again and wonder about getting one.

Handspring modules: EyeModule II

The Eyemodule II was an improvement on the eyemodule I in almost everyway and came in a lovely tin as well. Compared to today's smartphone cameras it is just a toy, but back then it was fun.

Handspring modules: Digital Voice Recorder

A nice little voice recorder for the handspring line. Useful as a dictaphone really.

Handspring modules: Xircom modem

This is a simple modem module. Works fine, but of course the entire technology is redundant now.

Handspring Modules: db Now

The db Now module was a full database on a piece of hardware. A clever idea really for back then.

Handspring modules: 8mb Flash Module

The 8mb module is great for simply expanding your device and getting more out of it. It's very simple to use too. Another clever use of it was to install a specific set of apps to one of these modules and then use it as a specific piece of hardware for a given task.

Handspring modules: EyeModule (I)

This is the first iteration of the eyemodule camera module. It was a nice module and worked well for it's time.

Handspring Modules: Backup

This is a simple module, but a handy one to have around. In fact it's very useful to have more than one so you could have lots of back ups sitting in different places.

Handspring Modules

So I thought I'd spend a little time remembering the different modules that were available back when Handspring were big, or at least big for a PDA company back then.

As I said in my post about Handspring and modular phones I do think that Handspring were really innovative in their day. In fact I think if they'd stayed around they'd be a big player. So let's see a few modules and remember how good they were.

Was the handspring a forerunner of the modular phone?

So I was thinking the other day about the Handspring series of devices and how their modular approach using the springboard modules is so similar to Phonebloks and the Ara project.

Handspring were pretty forward thinking in their design of the visor and its modules. I think if they'd stayed around and been allowed to develop their technology over that of the other PDA makers they would have done really well, and perhaps we'd be seeing the Handspring modular now.

Sunvox on Windows Mobile after a long walk

I don't do this so much now, but I used to walk about 4 miles home after work on a Friday and then stop for a pint and some Sunvox about a mile before the end of the walk.

It was a great start to the weekend and I miss it. So when I stumbled over this picture I thought it was worth celebrating it again.

It's a collection, from a while ago

I realised that I hadn't actually got my collection together for ages and taken a photo of the whole lot. This was from well over 3 years ago. So I'll have to do another before the end of the year I think and see what the whole thing looks like.

Have any Bhajis Loops instruments, or looking for some to use?

Well you find lots in the Palmorama Bhajis Loops instrument site and if you want to contribute (and you'd be very welcome) just contact me using the form in the about page, I'd be very happy to hear from you.

If you know what this is you'll know it didn't happen

Something that never happened, but that I wish it had, and if you know what it is, you'll probably agree with me too.

I never got one of these either ...

I wonder if you can even get these anymore, even on eBay.

Simple and brilliant

These serial to MIDI connectors from miniMusic are just the best. I love them. What excellent design.

What happened to Saguaro?

Sometimes (not that often actually) I do wonder what it would have been like if this had ever got out. It was such a good idea and had so much promise.

I wish I'd never gotten rid of this ...

At the time of course these kind of hardware add-ons for Palm were great but also we were just seeing things like Microbe and Bhajis Loops coming in for Palm OS5 and hardware wasn't as important.

So I sold it on eBay and now wish I hadn't!

I don't think that they will, but I wish they did ...

As far as I can see the Swivel Systems SG20 expansion modules don't put out MIDI parasitic power. Which is why I can't use the SG20 with my MIDI vampires, and that's a shame.

I do have a plan for how I might make it work, but we'll have to see if I can get that sorted.

I had actually forgotten that I had this

And to be fair I haven't done much with it so far. I think it deserves better though. Some windows mobile geerkery could be in order before Christmas at least ...

It's time to do this, but with the Rex 6000

I was talking to Mr Concreted0g over the last couple of days about doing stuff with my whole Palm OS array of devices, and one thing that came up with the Rex devices. The 5 above and of course my latest addition, the Rex 6000.

He was suggesting putting it into a Jornada 680 or 720, a device I don't (as yet) have. It's an interesting idea of course, but perhaps I think I should start out with the trusty Libretto first and see how I get on with that.

Interesting to talk to him about Palm PDAs though. There's not many of us left these days.

And then this stopped working ...

I have no idea why it won't work but it doesn't anymore. Which is a real shame. Not that I've particularly relied on it for anything much though.

Still. It is a part of my little museum. I'll keep it for now.

In 2000: Palm Mobile Internet Kit begins shipping

Connectivity for Palm devices was something that people had started talking about for a long time and before this the only thing you could do was read your email on the device and reply then sync and send the reply from your desktop. The mobile internet kit changed a lot.
