BeatPad and SG20

This is a little film showing what BeatPad can do. I'm using BeatPad here on a TRG Pro device running at just 16 mhz. The TRG Pro has an SG20 MIDI module plugged in. In the video I'm adjusting the pattern to change the drum sounds accessed.

AxisPad and StompBox Noises

This is a short video showing AxisPad (using sounds from SoundPad) being played through Pocket StompBox (a multi-effects processor) into a pair of portable speakers. Made me think of Dr Who soundtracks from the 70's !

Distracted by PP Applets

Whilst working on D-Pod and trying to add some new functionality it's very easy for me to get sidetracked and end up going down what seem at the time to be good ideas, but what eventually turn out to be blind alleys. In fact this seems to be a bit of a template for me in a number of areas!

PP Armlets is one such area. What are they? Good question. They're a way of writing very small bits of code of Palm OS that can be access via an iziBasic program. I sort of dabbled with these a long time ago in an attempt to do something like a synth on a palm device and I've been lured back towards them again in an attempt to make something more musical than I've managed to do in the past.

I suppose that it isn't necessarily a bad thing overall, but it can and probably will get in the way of finishing anything. So, why am I telling you this? Well, if you'd hoped to see an update to this app then it might take a bit longer. I might learn something useful, but I don't hold out too much hope that I'll manage to achieve my goal of getting these armlets to actually work in the way I want.

We'll see.

Today in 2005: Palm Inc. announces licensing of Windows Mobile to broaden the Treo smartphone range

I only tried the Treo 750 but I was never as fond of Windows Mobile as I was of the original Palm OS and I always thought that this was a bad move for Palm at the time.

An update on D-Pod 2

In case you were wondering, I'm still working on this little app. I decided that one of the things I wanted to do with it is to add more drum sounds. Now that's done I need to work out a way of giving the user easy access to each sound bank without too much trouble. So that's next on the list of things to work out. After that I have a few more things I'd like to do with it, but those may have to wait a little while at least.

Thought you might like an update.

Today in In 2000: VisorPhone Springboard module announced

The springboard module was a great idea and there were quite a few a manufactured. In fact the whole idea of modular hardware is great and I wish we'd see more of it.

Palm History Calendar now available

If you've visited the Palm OS app library in the past, you my have noticed a calendar on the right hand side. If you did notice it you probably won't have seen too much information in there. Well, it's changed now. It now has all of the significant dates from the history of the Palm world in it. That is, all the significant events as I see them.

You can take a look at it on the library site. I hope you find it interesting.

Griff is still free and well worth checking out

I haven't mentioned this for a while now, and it's easy to forget, but Ok, a final reminder about Griff for this year, as you can go grab Griff as it and all it's plug ins are now free. That is, the original ones are, but not the third party plugins.

If you don't have an WinMo device I've used a Dell Axim X51 which has always done really well for me, if you want to look for one, click here to search on eBay.

Maybe a bit better for Basic4ppc coding?

After a little work on my old Axim for coding using Basic4ppc it became very clear that using this device wasn't going to be as easy as palm coding using the Treo 650. Simply because of a lack of physical keyboard. So, I dug this old beauty out. It'll need some love and attention to get everything running on it, and I expect that will take some time to get right, but in the long run it'll be a lot easier I think.

Improving the look of help in D-Pod

Playing with adding a proper menu for help. This of course leads on to possibly adding other menus for other areas of the app ... and so it goes on ...

Taking a look at BeePo again

I know I shouldn't start on one thing and then pick up another part way through, but that's what I'm like. So I started to have a look at the ancient BeePo. It was my first ever app on the Palm OS. It doesn't really do anything, but it was fun to make.

So I'm thinking of ideas of how to improve it and make it almost worth using (maybe).

Bhajis Instrument site now up and running

You may have noticed, but then again you might now, that the little site for housing Bhajis Instrument files is now live. You can find it here.

Help for D-Pod 2

Next on the to do list is writing up some proper help, although this will almost certainly need to change as I change the rest of the app. Seems a little pointless. Still, I do need to work out a few things and this helps, so it isn't really wasted effort.

If you'd like to see how the smartwatch has evolved ...

Then take a look at this article at Technology Behind the World. It has a great run down from the 1940's right up to the Pebble. There's some amazing tech in there that I had no idea existed, and I'm doing my best to resist looking up some of it on eBay!

Setting up a Bhajis instrument site

I realised that I have a load of Bhajis Loops instrument files and decided that I should share them with you. So I'm setting up a little site under Palmorama to make these instrument files available to anyone who wants them.

It'll probably be ready later this week. When it is I'll let you know.

D-Pod 2, starting off with some minor updates

Adding in some simple alerts as an about box.

With a little help file

An about alert to say something about Palm Sounds

And some more detail too.

Take a look in the library

All you need to do is click above where it says library, or click here

Experimenting with MIDI in using the SG20

Another video already posted on Palm Sounds, but again something that's really very Palm OS related and belongs here too.

Using my iPad to enter notes on the TRG Pro running miniMusic's NotePad app. The MIDI in works but doesn't play a note, just enters it in the score. Play back is fine though.

SG20 MIDI expansion module, MIDI out indicator

Just a brief look at the MIDI out expansion module for the SG20 sound module running on my TRG Pro handheld.

I've already posted this on Palm Sounds a few days ago, but it's such a lovely old piece of hardware that I wanted it here as well.

I had an idea which I can't make work ...

And the reason it can't work because iziBasic 7 had these things still on the development roadmap:
  • Implement the CLIPBOARDADD statement
  • Implement the slider GUI object
  • Implement a button type without the border drawn around it
  • Study the opportunity to open access to the 256 bytes buffer to share with global variables in the so called “PP applets”
  • Study how to generate hidden applications, meaning applications with no form
  • Study how to implement built-in files access to external memory cards (SD Cards, Memory Sticks...)
  • Implement a sophisticated Boolean parsing capability for compilation of what is currently “v|n TestOper v|n” and “c|t TestOper c|t” in conditional statements. At this stage, I’d rather study how to re-engineer the parsing capabilities of iziBasic to allow complex expressions in all areas (this would be a huge work, easy to perform but requesting to write back most of the compiler and the virtual machine code!)
Given that the last update to iziBasic was back in July 2009 I doubt that these things will get delivered now. Which is a shame, but quite understandable.

Having a bash at basic4ppc again

Starting with the basics (no pun intended) again and seeing if I can make anything of any use with this.

A brief look at what D-Pod 2 does

Having re-compiled this Palm OS app I thought I'd just check that it does what I expected it to do.

Take a look in the Palmorama store ...

D-Pod 2: Test compile to make sure it still works

And it does! Ok, with a few little glitches, but it means that I can start making a few changes to my old Palm OS drum app.

D-Pod 2 begins ...

It had to happen sooner or later. I've decided to see what I can do to update the old app.
