Hedgehog and MU15

More of the lovely baby hedgehog controlling stuff. This time it's an old MU15 from Yamaha.

Simple MIDI connector for Palm OS

Now that's what I call a simple circuit diagram! Thanks to Mr Concreted0g for digging this one up.

Pocket PC MIDI Controller (Theresa)

I was scouting around for this and just couldn't believe that the Theresa software for Pocket PC is still around! I'm going to have to give this a try out at some point.

Some ideas in iziBasic

I've been having ideas again, that's always a dangerous thing for me. I was reading the latest version of the iziBasic manual as I wanted to see how I could send infrared to control my nebulophone.

It appears that you can send multiple infrared channels using iziBasic, which of course gives me ideas for creating some kind of weird multi PDA orchestra using infrared control. It's early days of course. Having said that, my mind's already run away with me on this idea.

So in my previous post you could see me making a start on a little demo that will hopefully send out infrared from one device to another. After that's working (and it might take a while) we'll see where it can go next.

Starting to test infrared ideas #pda

The trouble with using old software for MIDI

There's no one left to ask why this doesn't work! Which is a shame really, but the whole yBasic (HotPaw) thing isn't really working for me at the moment.

I might spend a bit more time with it to see if I can get it to work, but the likelihood is that it's a version incompatability or similar which will be really hard to address.

Experiment with triggering Nebulophone's infrared receiver using Piezo app on a Palm PDA

I posted this yesterday at Palm Sounds, but it belongs here too. Also I'm thinking that I might write a little app to send data out of the infrared port regularly to see what I can do with a PDA and the Nebulophone. We'll see how that goes.

Palm IIIxe screen as it goes through the upgrade process to OS4.1

It all worked, but it's always a tense time while it goes through the process.

Alternative operating systems for PDAs?

This is something that, alongside emulation, has always been of interest to me. So every now and then I have a search for stuff, and I've just found a version of Linux that might run on an old Palm IIIx. Having visited the site it appeared that all the downloads, and in fact, most of the pages were dead links.

What a shame. However, using the magic of the web archive I was able to locate the demo download and grab it. That's as far as I've got to date, but I hope to try this on a Palm IIIx very soon, and I'll let you know how it goes.

It's not just about music

It occured to me that a lot of stuff I've been posting here has been of a music-centric nature, and I wanted to say that it wasn't my intention for this to become another Palm Sounds. It isn't. In fact, what I'd like to focus on here is more to do with the original PDA technology from which our current mobile and tablet industries have sprung.

So, to give you a flavour of the things I'd like to cover I thought I'd come up with a little list. Here's the plan:
  • Original and rare PDAs
  • Useful and interesting sites that still focus their attention on older handheld and mobile technologies
  • Interesting or novel uses for old tech
  • Re-purposing older tech
  • Real world uses for old tech
  • Applications that are still available for PDAs (probably mostly around Palm OS), including:
    • Art and drawing
    • Internet based apps
    • Using PDAs to control other devices (i.e. Mindstorms NXT)
    • Hacks
    • Development of PDA software and tools
    • and of course, music related stuf too
That's the rough plan anyway. I thought it was worth saying. If I don't stick to it entirely, don't be too surprised.

Upgrading to Palm OS 4.1

Most Palm devices couldn't upgrade from one version of the OS to another, but OS4.1 was a rare exception and was the last OS update prior to Palm's range of ARM PDAs.

Anyway, I got my hands on one of these, and I'm going to upgrade my Palm IIIxe

miniMIXA running ...

It's a long way back from the current version of Mixitikl, but you can see where this journey started for Intermorphic.

Syntrax for Windows Mobile

I've put this back on my Axim. To be honest, whilst it's a really powerful piece of software I never properly got to grips with it though. Maybe I'll have another try now.

PocketJam for Windows Mobile

A Windows Mobile that I haven't used in ages. It's not dissimilar to a number of the earlier iOS music apps, and it still works well.

That's the inside of an old Palm modem

I thought I'd open this up to see what it was like. There's a lot packed in there. Of course these things aren't really of any use any more, but it's interesting to have a look and see what's inside.

Palm Bluetooth SD Card

As part of getting the M500 I got a bluetooth card with it, so I'm hoping that at least that works too.

A new look for the library

I've update the library with a new look which I think is a bit nicer than it was before. It's got a few updates too.

Phoenix Studio for Windows Mobile

I'd forgotten how good this windows mobile synth / sequencer was. It could (can) do a lot considering how old it is.

I'm really quite impressed with it again.

Monday, February 04, 2013

I picked up an M500 on eBay. I've never owned one of these before, so I was looking forward to seeing what it was like. Sadly, it looks like the one I've got has a non-functioning screen. That's a shame.

PDA Museum

I found this site (not sure if I've mentioned it before) which has some interesting information on PDA history, also has a lot of broken links and missing pages too, which is a shame.

Still worth a look though.

Making a mark ...

Finding miniMIXA

I posted this at Palm Sounds, but it deserves a 2nd viewing as it's part of mobile history.

Now that's really not happy at all

Yep, that's not right at all. Looks like it might need a factory reset.

IIIxe not happy

This is not a happy screen for the IIIxe. I think that perhaps some of my experiments have upset it.

Nope, that didn't work at all

Not sure what the problem was with that, but it wasn't happy at all. I was trying to get the Palm IIIxe to control my Nexus running Caustic 2.0, but I got nothing at all from this sadly.

Never mind. It's always good to keep experimenting.

The sync power behind Rex

Could old TrueSync! Loading up now! Once the Rex is up and running we'll see if this works.

It's easy to forget just how customisable Windows Mobile was

You could do a lot with your home screen and really make it look the way you wanted, which was great. I'd forgotten how much fun it could be.
